New portable genome sequencing technology from the University of Otago has enabled better crop outcomes in remote parts of East Africa. Combined with other technology, real-time results on battery-powered devices were gathered in the field, away from traditional computing or electricity infrastructure. There’s strong potential for this technology to be applied globally, leading to better defences against viral pathogens and other crop threats.
