Matū Group operates venture capital funds that invest in scalable science and deep tech start-ups in Aotearoa New Zealand. We take a hands-on, active approach to helping early-stage companies have the best start to life, enabling them to create positive impact and improve the world we live in.
Matū Group is growing fast, and is now hiring an Analyst or Senior Analyst to join our team. From day one, you will be an important part of our unique team! You can see more about us, and our portfolio companies, at our website: https://matu.co.nz/
Key Roles and Responsibilities
- Attending pitch meetings and working with our pipeline partners
- Conducting various stages of due diligence on initial and follow on investment opportunities
- Assisting with business development and market research activities for our research partners and our portfolio companies
- Developing market intelligence and analysing local and international market trends
- Introducing connections between different industries, sectors, and communities
- Learning about governance including the opportunity to observe on or join start-up Boards
- Key support for fund reporting, company and portfolio valuation, marketing, and events
- Helping grow the Matū whānau – our team, our culture, and our investments
We will help you learn more about the deep tech start-up ecosystem and build relationships with some of our key stakeholders. You will be actively supported by a strong team of scientific and commercial experts, and also given room to develop your own profile and reputation. You will have the opportunity to help shape our organisation and processes as we go through a step change in the Matū journey.
Our work is guided by our core values: kaitiaki (guardianship), māia (bravery), pono (integrity), and aroha (passion). We approach fund management with an intergenerational view, building a community that delivers long-term benefits. We aim to make decisions that leave the world in a better place than before, achieving more than just financial gain.
This is a permanent, full-time position, with the potential to grow your career as with us. We are committed to helping train the next generation of investment professionals through our well developed internal programs and processes. We uphold a principle of equitable opportunity in hiring and seek to improve the level of diversity in the investment sector. We aim for our remuneration packages to be above market benchmarks.
We are looking for candidates from entry-level up to three years experience within early-stage investment. If you have a commercial background in consulting, running a start-up, or investing (investment banking, private equity, or venture capital) that would be great, but it’s not necessary! A passion for science and technology is more important, and we encourage candidates with deep knowledge and/or an advanced degree in a relevant field even if you have no experience with investing or start-ups.
You will need excellent verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated desk research experience, critical thinking to ask the important questions, and good office computing abilities (MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint or Google Docs/Sheets/Slides). We are a remote-first organisation so you can work from anywhere in New Zealand, with occasional travel (COVID-permitting!). This means you need to be capable of working independently, as well as being a nice person who can collaborate with others as part of a wider virtual team.
Please send applications or questions to [email protected]. To apply, please send a CV and a short cover letter, with particular emphasis on why you are interested in a career as an investment professional with Matū. Please also declare any potential conflicts of interest. Applications close 3 March 2022.
Candidates for this position must have the legal right to work in New Zealand, and maintain an ability to travel. Direct inquiries only please – no agencies.
